A wacky Stanford tradition
In 1911, Stanford’s Ram’s Head Theatrical Society produced the first rendition of the show, known then as the Football Follies, a performance revue to rally students for the Stanford-Cal rugby game. The name was soon changed to the current Big Game Gaieties, which over the years has transformed into the familiar plot and theme of “Beat Cal!” that is the culmination of blood, sweat, tears, and above all, laughter.
As graphic designer for Gaieties 2018, entitled Jane Stanford and the Chamber of Secrets, I worked with the producing team and designed all materials used in the publicity and marketing for the production, including posters, programs, social media banners, and more. In addition, I designed merchandise to be sold at the Stanford Student Store as well as at every show during Big Game Week.
A unique aspect of the poster design comes from Stanford’s own archives – the hand-drawn map of Stanford in the background, drawn in 1906 soon after the founding of the institution.
