Footprint

User research and interface design for consumer carbon footprint app.

The brief

Footprint helps users become environmentally friendly by using AI and computer vision to identify, suggest, and track non-invasive changes to user’s purchasing habits. By tracking the health and wellness products we use and recommending eco-friendly alternatives, we help people make better decisions in their personal lives to reduce their carbon output.

Empowering eco-conscious decisions

From our needfinding interviews with people in the Bay Area, a common insight we found was that people like to stick to routines and don’t deviate very often; all the knowledge in the world about eco-conscious products won’t matter of the activation energy to take that decision is too great.

We imagine a solution where we take the guess-work out of finding cost-conscious, eco-friendly alternatives and nudge users to improve their purchasing habits over time.

A friend to cheer you on

Leif is Footprint’s eco-warrior. He’s the one suggesting changes, finding product substitutes, tracking impact, and looking into recommendations, cost comparisons, location availability, and environmental impact to synthesize the perfect eco-friendly alternative.

He’s bubbly and cute, and is happy to help you do your best to save the planet, one bottle of shampoo at a time.

Find an eco-friendly alternative

Central to Footprint’s functionality is its recommendation system. Users can scan the product they currently use and Leif will suggest environmentally-friendly alternatives, with the option to save particular items for later.

Over time, Footprint will capture the choices that users make and track their progress towards personal goals.

Outcomes

Footprint won Most Potential Impact at Stanford’s 2019 Grand Global Challenges Expo.
